I'm sorry you are having this problem. You have received some good information from Dezeray with the first link about the compressor. From the information listed, it sounds like the compressor is overheating and shutting off too soon. This can be due to a low refrigerant charge, the compressor itself or if it's located in a high ambient location, the compressor can overheat. A technician will be required to check the system charge and the compressor. If it's in a location that can cause the compressor to overheat, such as the following, there is an add on fan kit that will help correct this problem.

  • A closed boxed in area
  • Next to another freezer or refrigerator
  • In a location such as a garage that can be subject to high temperatures.
The fan kit # 5304411775 is available at SearsPartsDirect . I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance, any additional details will be helpful and I will be glad to assist you further.

I had a chance to sit and in the garage for awhile and pay attention to the time. The freezer is not shutting off (or cycling) in any normal time span. It was running over a half hour (compressor was vibrating so I guess it was running) and no cooling whatsoever. During that half hour or so, the compressor kept vibrating but never got very warm or hot. (My earlier post indicating it was warm/hot was probably after it had been running for several hours.) While running, none of the coolant lines get either warm or cold. Teh fins never cool. I also figured out what that switch was - the defrost timer. I turned it until the entire freezer shut off and after about a half hour it came back on. Again, any ideas that might point me in a certain direction?

Based on this latest information, this appears to be a sealed system or compressor problem. It could be a low charge, a restriction or the compressor may not be pumping properly. These are checks which will require a technician to make. You can call 1-800-469-4663 to schedule a tech to come out. If this turns out to be a compressor problem, I would not recommend repairing it. The cost would probably be as much or close, to what a new freezer would cost.

I have a similar issue. I believe my freezer tripped a breaker awhile back. Now I turn it on it doesn't cool. If I turn the defrost button around, it will start cooling again. I actually ran it and it was fine. I sold it and then found out it didn't work again. I called a tech and he said that it sounds like it may be the defrost mechanism. That is an inexpensive fix, which I hope works, but don't know if I should do that or have a tech come out. Went out and checked now, and it is not cool, and the compressor is hot.

brent, I think you should get a technician to repair the freezer. The problem could be the defrost timer, but it could also be a sealed system problem. You need a freezer to be dependable. The loss of food if it fails will usually be more than the price of the repair.
