Thank you for your question. I�m sorry you�re having this problem with your freezer. You are correct with your guess. When the only to get the freezer to run is using the quick freeze feature, it indicates the cold control # 216715400 has failed and will need to be replaced. The door suction will not have an affect on this unless the door is not making a good seal. It does not have to make a suction to have a good seal. As long as the gasket is making good contact with the cabinet, it should be ok. It�s also normal for the sides to get warm because there are some hot gas refrigerant lines that run inside the cabinet. Replacing the cold control should solve this problem.
