I can understand the concern when the dehumidifier is running without removing moisture.  The number provided does not provide information, but I have located a Kenmore Elite dehumidifier for model 251.99701. The operation of the dehumidifier can be affected by temperature.  If the ambient temperature is low, the automatic setting will not dehumidify as much at a lower temperature.  The temperature limit at which the dehumidifier will work is 65 degrees.  It is possible that the evaporator of the dehumidifier is frosting up constantly or more frequently. A defrost sensor will shut off the compressor and run only the fan when this frost is detected so that it can be melted off of the evaporator fins. At 67 to 70 degrees, this defrost process can take a while. Make sure that your filter and side grills are properly cleaned on a periodic basis to prevent restricting air flow through the dehumidifier. Use the maintenance section of this manual to help clean the filter and side grills.  Listen for the compressor kicking on.  If only the fan runs, then you may need to take the dehumidifier to a service center for repair.  You can find a local service center here; Sears Home Services .  If your model number is different than 2519970, please reply with the correct number for further help.  Thank you for using Manage My  Life.

Thanks for the information on your dehumidifier; sorry to hear you are experiencing a problem. Based on the stock number you provided I researched to find the model number to be 251.99701. If this is correct I can find no recall or any reported issue that relates to the odor problem you describe.

Because of no reported similar issue of odors I can only suggest having the dehumidifier inspected by a technician who can determine the source of the problem and file any reports of his findings, if needed. I would also suggest not using the product in the meantime.

I will add a link for service here for your convenience; If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .

Thank you for your question on the dehumidifier´┐Żs compressor not running.

If you have the unit turned on and set to 3 which is AUTO function in the display, the compressor should turn on in less than five minutes.

Please make sure the bucket is empty and docked into the chassis correctly and with the unit on and the fan is running, the compressor after five minutes should be running.

Do you hear a click and the lights dim in the house circuit? If that is happening the compressor is locked up and will need to be replaced.

If it is not even trying to come on it could be one of the control boards in the console.

Since this unit is probably less than 5 years old I would suggest taking it in for service. If the compressor is the problem the repair of the sealed refrigeration system will be covered under warranty.

Please let me know what you find out.
