Thank you, we know that the locations for the model are all scraped off; is there a secret place for a serial number? because we haven't searched for that.

Thank you for your question.

I will be happy to assist you with determining the model number of the tractor. We have books that have the model numbers list. I will need to know a little more about the tractor before I can look up the number. Please let me know about how old the tractor is, if it is manual or automatic, the deck size, and all the numbers off the engine. With this information, I should be able to find out the model number. You can also look under the hood often times the most common parts are listed there.

Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark T.

1. How old is mower Not certain, over 5 yrs maybe 7 or 8. 2. Manual or automatic I do not know how to determine if it is automatic. I assume it is automatic because it has a handle labeled automatic cruise control. Otherwise it has 1 pedal for forward, 1 pedal for reverse, and a brake pedal. 3. Deck size 48 4. Numbers on engine Family 1KHXS.6242GC DSPL (CC) 624 Side of mower label: KOHLER PRO 20 V-TWIN On top of engine label: CRAFTSMAN KOHLER PRO 20 HP, V-TWIN POWER, OVERHEAD VALVE, PRESSURE LUBRICATION, HYDRAULIC VALVE LIFTERS, LARGE OIL AIR, AND FUEL FILTER PART NUMBER LIST ON HOOD ITEM PART # STOCK # 48 BLADES (3) (HD/HL) 173920 GROUND DRIVE BELT 140294 24103 PRIMARY MOWER BELT 174368 SECONDARY MWR BELT 174369 AIR FILTER 24-083-02 PRE-CLEANER 47-083-03 SPARK PLUG RC12YC 85871 OIL FILTER 52-050-02 24606 FUEL FILTER 24-050-02 KEYS 140403 24040 BATTERY 30 AMP OIL CAPACITY 64 oz

Q:

lawn tractor choke

A:

I recommend that you remove the choke cable from the engine. Once the cable is off you should be able to determine if the cable has seized or the linkage is stuck. I have provided you with an image of where the cable connects to the engine. Please note which hole the cable is installed in. If you find the cable is the cause of the problem, you can try spraying it with WD-40 to loosen it up. I recommend replacing the choke cable if it is kinked. The part number for the choke cable is 187768X505 and can be ordered from this link. Sears parts direct When installing the cable make sure the choke is pushed in and the choke lever is in the full off position before tightening the clamp.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Thanks for the answer to my choke problem. I will see if I installed the new cable incorrectly. It's almost like something creates a vaccum on the choke. I'll let you know.

I have had the same problem and recorded the solution earlier to a different conversation on managemylife.com. The solution is buy a shorter oil filter. For some reason about two years ago Sears has associated my tractor model number with a longer oil filter. Once installed the choke control cable now rests on the oil filter. After the oil filter gets so hot, the inside of the choke control cable seizes up. I remember that my tractor model 917 once used a shorter filter. Sears for some reason has since changed me to the longer oil filter (24606). I now ignore this and buy the shorter oil filter (24604). If your choke control cable is resting on your oil filter, you will probably need to relace it with the shorter oil filter. If your choke control cable is seized up, you will probably have to replace this as well. Sometimes you can free it up, but you have to be lucky. I had to replace two choke control cables before figuring out the cause of the problem.
