Thank you for the model number information on your vacuum cleaner. In most cases when a vacuum cleaner has this happen it means that the motor has failed and the suction motor will need to be replaced. Because of the cost of the motor and the labor to put it in it is not cost effective to have it repaired. This motor alone is $150.00. I would suggest purchasing a new upright vacuum cleaner. I again apologize for not getting your question answered sooner. Sam A.

I apologize that the question has not been answered yet.

Based on your symptoms, the motor overload probably tripped. You can reset that overload by pushing the reset button that is circled in the image below.

Before trying to plug the vacuum cleaner in and start it after resetting that overload, I recommend that you check the belt and the agitator. Here is a link for that manual on that vacuum cleaner Kenmore Destiny Vacuum Cleaner 204.36999690 Manual . That manual should help you access the belt and the agitator. That burning smell was probably the belt. I suspect that you may have some hair or debris wrapped around that agitator brush the bottom of the vacuum cleaner. You may need to pull that agitator out and clean the roller bearing on it. That may fix your problem. Reassemble the vacuum cleaner and see if it works properly.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will try to assist you further.

If you get to a point where you need to have a service technician examine and repair the vacuum cleaner, you can carry it into your nearest Sears Repair Center or Sears Store.
