I do not have a warranty on the washer. It is less than 2 years old. Service would cost over $200. I do luckily have an extended plan on my Kenmore elite refrigerator which is also less than 2 years old and has already been serviced twice. I am entirely disgusted with Kenmore appliances and do not wish to deal with Sears any more than I have to.

On this model of washer if the cold water supply is too cold the washer will fill with hot water by design until the thermister senses a warm enough temperature to dissolve the laundry detergent. If you live in the north & the incoming water supply is too cold the detergent will not dissolve.

From what you're describing I do not suspect a problem with the washer.

Please see the image in the attachment below for details.

If the temp does not change as designed I recommend replacing the ATC control.

First, disconnect power to the washer. You will need a putty knife to release the clips holding the console down to the top panel. I am sending you the instructions in the attachment below.

Another possibility is the thermister/watervalve. This will need tested with an ohmmeter.

After making these initial checks please reply back if you need further assistance, Thank you.

Thank you for your comments and efforts to help. I do believe that this model is designed to function as you describe; I already think the functions are pathetic and now you're telling me that the machine is going to put hot water in first (on top of even my delicate clothes that must be put in first) if the cold water is too cold??!! I won't get into my disappointment in the design further than that at this point. I will get back to my problem....You say that you doubt that there is a problem with the machine? Then why does it use entirely HOT water when set to COLD and entirely COLD water when set to HOT and if warm or cool is selected it used entirely HOT water?! Originally I said that it "partially" filled with hot water first, but I should have said either "mostly" or "entirely" because it has so much hot water in the tub that steam is coming out around the lid. I do not live in the north; I live in Texas. I have managed a home for 36 yrs and have gone through every imaginable scenario of laundry care and have NEVER had a machine that ruined my clothes and used hot water for cold and cold water for hot. Perhaps one of your suggested fixes will work; It will be worth a try. Thanks again.
