Thank you for your question on the lathe motor for your Craftsman wood lathe.

I would recommend a 1 h.p 1725 rpm clockwise rotation motor.

You will also need a step pulley that will fit the shaft for the motor you are purchasing. You can get standard step pulleys at most better hardware stores and home centers. If you have a WWGrainer store outlet in your area that would be a good place to find these items. The motor should be mounted to the bench next to the lathe so that both step pulleys align. You can mount the motor on a hinged pivot plate on the bench so the weight of the motor will tension the belt and so you can easily lift and lower the motor to move the belt to change speeds.

You should have an on/off switch wired to the motor some place handy for turning off the lathe if you need to quickly.

Please let me know how the lathe motor project went and if you need more information please reply back on this thread.

I also own a Craftsman 149.23860 lathe. Does anyone know what years they were manufactured and by whom? Thanks!
