Q:

Pilot light will not stay lit 153339561 Kenmore Water heater

A:

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I can certainly understand how frustrating it can be when your pilot on your Water heater is not staying lit. I did look into the model number you have provided and I have found two main reasons the pilot would not stay lit.

For flame and pilot outage the 2 most common reasons are a stopped up air vent or arrester. You can check and clean the air vent but a technician will be required to clean the arrester which is located under the burner assembly. Listed below are the main reasons for frequent pilot outage:

  • Clogged air intake screen(s) or flame arrester
  • Insufficient combustion / ventilation air supply
  • Improper vent system design or operation
  • High ambient air temperature (115 F or more)

A technician will be required to make these types of checks.

Thank you for your prompt reply Natasha12. Unfortunately in my haste my post was poorly worded. I purchased and installed the entire burner assembly, metal cover an all. My question should have read "Should I replace the gas valve assembly next"? not repeat burner assembly as I did in the original post. That must have caused much confusion.. The arrester under the burner should be cleaned? I vacuumed out all dust prior to installing the new burner assembly. I even looked down from the top of the unit threw the opening for the baffle. Everything is clean and clear there to. Todd

Yes sounds to me like your next option would be the gas valve because it is not getting enough gas to the pilot to stay lit. Thank you for your question. Have a great day.

Q:

Pilot stays lit, but does gas heater does not turn on.... 153339561 Kenmore Water heater

A:

I know that it can be very frustrating to have issues with your water heater. From what you are describing is sounds like the tank temperature has exceeded the safe limit because the gas valve has become stuck. If the water temperature leaving the tank is scalding hot then try and turn down the thermostat temperature. If it is normal, the gas valve needs to be replaced. I am sorry you are having a problem with the anode rod. The hole in the tank for the rod should be the same size as the threads on the anode rode. I suspect the hole has closed up over the years. You can try to open the hole by reaming the hole with a large screwdriver. Once the hole is cleaned up you can install the new anode rod. The new anode rod will be a little smaller than the threads on the rod.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you for using Manage my life.
