Q:

How old is my water heater? 153337463 Kenmore Gas, water heater

A:

Thank you for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

Your right, the serial number will usually provide the date of manufacture within it, but sometimes they are cryptic in how they state the manufacture date. Sometimes the third or fourth digit will be year it's made.

My internal records are showing me this Kenmore water heater was manufactured in 2004. The month of manufacturer based upon my system is September. The format for reading the manufacture date will vary across products, and there is no sure-fire way to read them for DOM.

Sorry I couldn't clarify the serial number for this model, but I do show it was manufactured 9/2004. Let me know if I can be of further assistance and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

Q:

Replaced the thermalcouple. Still won't light. 153337463 Kenmore Gas, water heater

A:

Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your question about you Kenmore Gas Water Heater. I am so sorry to hear that it will not light. I know how important hot water is in so many ways in our daily lives. I will be happy to help you with this.

It looks like you have already taken the first step. When the water heater isn’t working, the first part to check is the thermal coupling. Since you have replaced this part, I am assuming that the pilot assembly does light. (The thermal coupling’s probe needs to be in the flame of the pilot otherwise the gas valve will not open.) I am sorry that didn’t resolve the issue for you.

SAFETY WARNING: Be sure to disconnect the power supply when cleaning parts on the Water Heater. Also be sure to turn off the gas supply. If you are not familiar with completing repairs on a gas appliance, I recommend having a qualified technician complete the repairs for you.

If the pilot is lighting but goes out immediately, then I recommend removing and cleaning the pilot orifice and line. Also clean the main burner as these parts may become clogged. If you have turned off the gas supply to work on the water heater, there may be air in the lines. If there is air in the lines, it may take several attempts are relighting the pilot before it stays lit. If the gas control valve has failed, it will need to be replaced. It is not a repairable part.  I have included the link to order the gas valve for you.
