I am sorry you are having a problem with the water heater. If the tank is leaking, it is recommended to replace it as soon as possible. The reason is the leak can get worse quickly. I have seen a slow leak turning into a basement flooding leak over night. I know there is not a convenient time for any appliance to fail but this is one that should be replaced. I recommend turning the water off to the water heater until it is replaced. This will insure you do not have to extensive water damage.
