If the pilot won't light, it will be due to either a weak thermocouple or a defective gas valve. If the pilot does light but won't stay lit, I recommend replacing the thermocouple # H06E-036. It's not very expensive, approximately $8.00. If it won't light at all or if it still won't stay lit after a new thermocouple has been installed, the gas valve # F145-1277 will have to be replaced. This part is more expensive approximately $100.00. If you feel confident in your repair skills and can repair this yourself, then it would be worth repairing. If a technician is needed and the gas valve needs to be replaced, then it would be borderline to fix or replace. You will need to check the price, to have a new water heater installed versus replacing the gas valve. This water heater may last a few more yrs but if the tank starts to leak and it could now at any time, then it's not repairable. I hope this helps you.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
