Hello Karen,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with your water heater and I would like to assist you. I have read over your description and I have a few suggestions. I have attached the lighting instructions at the end of this reply, and it is very important to observe all safety warnings. Was the gas valve on the supply line also shut off? It is not too likely that the selector being left on pilot would cause the valve to fail. If the selector was forced, that would potentially cause failure.

I think that attempting to light the pilot light a few times, following the instructions that are in the owner's manual, may help out. It will verify that the lines have been purged out. Also be sure to verify that the gas valve on the supply line is on. I also wonder if you smell gas at all when attempting to light the pilot light?

Please let me know any additional information and if you would like any further assistance.
