Question and Answers

Q:

Why is my electric water heater have less hot water than a few days ago, will replacing the heating elements help?

A:

Your water heater could very well have a burnt out heating element or if could have a tripped hi-limit reset button on the upper element thermostat or it could have a tripped hi-limit on the lower element thermostat.

In order to diagnose the failure will require disconnecting the power supply to the water heater and then disconnecting the wires from the heating elements and checking the two heating elements for continuity. The elements basically screw in and out of the water heater. The elements must have 220 volts supplied to them in order to heat. NOTE: I do not recommend checking voltages unless you have experience and feel safe and confident in doing so otherwise I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your water heater.
