I can understand your concern. The flaps inside the nipples are heat traps. Heat traps prevent heat loss through the inlet and outlet pipes. The heat trap's design prevents this heat loss and helps make the water heater more energy efficient, while allowing proper flow when the heater is in use. You can remove the flappers by knocking them out or getting some nipples that do not have the flappers. I do however recommend using these nipples. I hope this helps you.
