Thank you for your question. That is definitely a reason for concern. If the hot water does not last, it could be caused by a broken dip tube or a hot water leak somewhere in the home.

Turning the water heater to its maximum setting can be extremely dangerous and could be causing the limit switch to trip.

I would advise you to do a draw down test. A draw down test, gives a rough calculation as to the water heaters efficiency. Follow the steps in the document that is linked below.

Q:

Why won't my water heater continue to heat?

A:

According to your symptoms, it sounds like you have a bad thermostat. Check your thermostat settings according to your owner's manual. If you do not have your owner's manual, you can view it online through our website. Follow these instructions to access your manual:

On the home page, hold your mouse over the square labeled "HOME" in the upper left of the page and choose the option "Products and manuals" from the drop-down menu that appears.

Then enter the following information into the search fields: CATEGORY: Plumbing, PRODUCT: Water Heater, BRAND: Kenmore, MODEL #: 153316755 .

If your thermostats are set properly, one or both may be defective. I recommend replacing both thermostats at the same time. This will likely fix your problem.

If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details.
