Q:

I own the Kenmore Air purifier 85254. Two questions: what does the Orange light on the panel indicate? What does the ionizer do? 15285254 Kenmore Air cleaner

Q:

I have a air cleaner #85254. & I want to know if this unit has a carbin filter or cole filter. & what the ozone is after I turn the ionizer off. Please help.

A:

Air cleaners add peace of mind that we are breathing cleaner air. The owner's manual is a good place to get information about the air cleaner and will have filter replacement numbers if needed. I attached to the first link below. The second link includes an attachment that has some of the specific information in your question. I hope this helps while you wait for the expert.

Lorraine - The manual for your cleaner is available at the first link shown below. On page 6 it indicates that the Pre-filter is a charcoal filter. The construction of the HEPA (Highe Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is not given. They are usually of some form of fibre construction. The manual for your machine makes no mention of an ionizer, where did you get that information from? An ionizer does not normally produce ozone, which is in fact an isotope of oxygen and very reactive, not really what you want to be about, see the second link below.

Thank you big uggy for the information on the air filter. You are right in that this unit will not have a particulate ionizer like an electrostatic air cleaner. It may be what they are talking about. Sam A.

Sam - You are welcome. A little bit off the original subject, but unless these electrostatic air cleaners have a 'collection plate' of some description they are not, in my opinion, worth a lot. The wife brought one home some years ago without a collection plate, it worked great provided the 'old' TV was on, the screen acted as a great 'collection plate'. It did not last very long!

The manual does, in fact, describe that there is an ionizer, and, according to EPA, ionizers unquestionably produce ozone. My question was misstated by the rep. I want to know if the unit continuously produces ozone if the ionizer switch is off. Also, I wanted to know if the unit contained an activated charcoal filter. Thank you for your anticipated response.

I am not a 'rep', I am a member of the public who is trying to help. Posters' with 'Expert' under their 'name' to the left of the post are employed by Sears Holding Corporation (SHC). The model number you have quoted, 85254, on this site (managemylife.com) pulls up a manual for two model numbers, 152.85250 and 152.85254, this is the manual that I referenced above. Now as you state that 'the manual' does describe that there is an ionizer and your post indicates that one is fitted to your machine I can only conclude that the manual pulled up on this site has the incorrect model number(s) or that the '85254' you have quoted is incomplete or incorrect. As there is nothing else I can do to verify the validity of the manual could you please check the full model number of the machine on the machine itself and also what model number is quoted on/in the manual you have? Could you also please confirm the brand of the machine, the manual I have referenced is for a 'Kenmore'? Thank you. Your question is posted above and I cannot comprehend where I have misstated it. That however is not the point I am trying to answer your questions 'as put'. As this site only allows a post from 'public' members to be 2,000 characters long I shall post this and continue the discussion in a further post.

Continued from above - Could you please advise me of the source of your statement "according to EPA, ionizers unquestionably produce ozone"? In the EPA website I have referenced above the EPA describe how ionizers work, I strongly suggest that your read it. Further as the it, the EPA website, appears to be solely constructed to advise the public of the hazards of ozone I find it strange that they do not mention that ionizers 'unquestionably produce ozone". Ozone is normally produced in the lower atmosphere, the area we humans live in, by either high votage electrical discharges, or the interations between sunlight, oxides of nitrogen and volotile organic compounds. Therefore it is possible that some ionizers may produce very small quantities of ozone by high voltage electrical discharges. Until we can ascertain what your model number is and what filters are fitted much further comment in theis regard would not appear to be beneficial. I will say this the manual I referenced above does state a charcoal filter is fitted now although it does not say it is 'activated charcoal' but does require it to be renewed at regular intervals there does not, to me at least. seem to be much sense in it being anything other than 'activated' which just means that it has a very large surface area for the volume in question and can therefore absorb a relative large quantity of contaminants before becoming 'choked' and requiring renewal. I look forward to your response with interest. Thank You

Q:

Is it possible to disable the ionizer?

A:

According to your other question, I see that you have a Kenmore air cleaner model 152.85254. This air filter does not have serviceable parts. Only the filters are replaceable. I do not know of a way to disable the ionizer. If the air filter will not work, it will need to be replaced.
