Q:

dies after choke fuel is gone. 917377190 Craftsman Gas, walk behind lawnmower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you’re having with the engine not staying running after primed. I know how frustrating that is.

This sounds like an issue with the carburetor, and it will need to be thoroughly cleaned, rebuilt, or replaced.

If you choose to clean the carburetor first, I would pull the carb from the engine. With a full can of carb cleaner, a wire brush, and a bread tie wire to poke through and clean the main jet; I would recommend a very thorough cleaning. Start by taking off the float bowl. Douse it very liberally with carb cleaner, and undo the pin for the float, and remove the needle and float. Clean them very thoroughly with the wire brush and carb cleaner. Pay close attention to the seat the needle sits in and clean it well. Once clean, start brushing the carb bowl and body and make sure you get all the varnish out. It may take three or four brushings with carb cleaner dousing in-between. From there, take the straw of the carb cleaner and shoot carb cleaner through any little hole or passageway of the carb. Shoot out the throat of the carb and poke the main jet with the bread tie wire. You have to make sure you get everything the first time, if you leave anything behind, it’s likely to reclog once you have it reassembled.

If you decide to rebuild or replace the carburetor, the engine model number of 143.006700 needs to be inputted in Sears Parts for the engine related parts. The carburetor assembly is part number 640350, and the rebuild kit is 49-019.

Oil stick problem 917.377190

A:

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is trouble with the engine.

Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Craftsman lawnmower model number 917.377190.   With that model number I see the original engine model number a 143006700, a Techumseh engine.

I have the picture below to click on the blue link.  I am guessing that your oil O"ring have given out.  Not making that seal when you push the oil dipstick down on it.  Look at key number 307 on the picture below.

Depending on how bad the carburetor is gone as to what you should do.  From my experience and knowing how bad the "ethanol" gas is out there that I would invest and do it right.   I would save the time, the headaches, to know I will get it done right the first time and get me a new carburetor.  Also because of my experience with selling these items and knowing the long run of things to invest in new fuel line also.   Get it all done right the first time.   It will be wise for you to get some fuel stabilizer.   Wise to use it at the start of every year and at the end of the year.   Also never use gas that is sitting in the tank of your shed for more than a month.
