Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

I assume you when you use the term "steak burner" that you are referring to the "infrared" burner.

Turn the "steak/infrared" burner knob to High and see it will light manually using the paper match using the lighting stick.

If it does not ignite and there is no gas flow, I would have to suspect a faulty burner valve. Also, make sure the "infrared" burner and grill is not covered in grease.

I added a link to the Use and Care Instructions if needed.

Mike: Based on the symptom, the burner valve will likely have to be replaced but it appears by the parts list, the gas valve is not offered a separate part. The manifold assembly with gas valves will need to replaced. I do not show a part number of just the valve. Since the valve is not available, I would take a close look at and see if it can removed from the manifold. If so, you may be able to take it apart and clean it. Here is the UR to the Use and Care Guide. You will need to copy and past the URL in the browser. http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/lis_pdf/OWNM/L0801002.pdf

i copied and pasted the web site and there are many pdf articles but i don't see one regarding my grill. i am not completely sure what i am looking for. sorry, I am 66 and not 100% savy of the procedure you are recomending to get the information I need. I disconnected the natural gas hose recently and moved the grill a few feet so that i could pressure clean under and around. i reconnected everything and the grill itself worked fine. When i tried the steak burner recently, it would not remain on once i released the igniter the flame stops. as i mentioned i replaced the whole infrared system in December and this must be a different problem than i had then. At that time it would not light at all but it was a cleaning issue for one of the igniter pieces. This time at least the igniter works but nothing after i release it. thanks again.

Mike: The URL will connect you to the Use and Care Guide for you model grill. It has information and a diagram of the parts and parts list. Key #24 is the Gas Valve/Manifold assembly which is most likely the part that will need to be replaced. The valve does not appear to be available as separate part so you will have to replace the gas valve/manifold assembly key #24 as shown on page 6 for the "NG" natural gas.

Model #14117674800 Kenmore Elite Gas grill won't light

A:

I can appreciate your practical question.  The regulator and/or hose could very well cause this problem.  I have located a link that will discuss your situation in more detail.
Click here to view the link.  Though this link discusses a different model number,
the mechanics are likely going to be very similar.Keep in mind that an expert will be
responding within the next two business days if not sooner and will likely offer you more information and
instruction.  I hope this is helpful for you and have a nice day.

It is time to get the grill ready for barbeque season. The reasons for a grill not to light can be a low or empty tank, debris blocking the burner orifice, or a bad regulator.  The regulator is often the cause, but it may also be the gas flow through the regulator.  I can tell you have already made some preliminary checks, but this video may help find something missed.  It does help to make sure the saftey valve in the regulator is not just being affected by sudden, high gas flow. I have also added two images to further help troubleshoot the issue.  Unless the gas manifold and burners are rusted out, a thorough cleaning should be enough. If the grill seems fine, I would have the tank checked for a leak. If further assistance is needed, please reply.

Thank you guys! I failed to mention that this grill is hard piped to the homes natural gas supply. That further narrows down the problem. I removed both sides of the regulator, one at a time to prove there was gas flow through the regulator. I found no problem there, and a visual inspection of the gas valve assembly assured me it was an unlikely culprit in a "no flow" situation. I once again tried to light the grill, and sure enough, it lighted! Barbara mentioned the safety valve in the regulator and my guess is that it had indeed engaged and that by removing the lines, I released the pressure and the safety, reset. Of course that is a guess as until a few hours ago I didn't know of the existence of the safety valve. Thank you both. David
