Thank you for your question on the steering for the riding lawn mower.

It sounds like your steering sector gear and the pinion gear attached to the steering wheel shaft have stripped and will need to be replaced.

It is also possible that the hex bearing on the bottom end of the steering shaft is worn enough that the steering gear and the steering plate no longer mesh.

If you remove the mower deck from the tractor you and follow the steering links back from the front wheels to the steering sector you should be able to see which parts are worn.

We ended up replacing the gear and the flange. We got the gear steer but the old one was fine, so we returned that.
