Craftsman walk-behind mower

A:

With the mower back firing can be rather concerning. I have done some research on the Manage My Life website and have located a link that is similar to your issue. While you are waiting for a detailed reply from an expert I have provided the link below. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your question about the engine rattling and backfiring.

It sounds like when you hit the tree root and bent the blade that you may have partially sheared the flywheel key even though you may have not bent the crankshaft and now the engine is slightly out of time. It doesn't take a lot to get it out of time.

You will need to remove the top of the engine and the flywheel to replace the flywheel key.

If you feel comfortable with doing this repair please let me know and I can give you some instructions.

You will also need to have a flywheel puller to remove the fly wheel to replace the key.

Fly wheel key part number .

Flywheel puller for Briggs and Stratton engine model 126T05-1071-E1 .

Please let me know what you would like to do.
