I know that it can be very difficult to have issues with your tractor. Change the battery on a lawn tractor is fairly easy. However it is important to make sure the wiring is correct. The positive to the positive terminal and the negative to the negative. This video will show the proper procedure: How to Replace Battery. If the wires are testing a reverse hookup, then somewhere in your wiring you are going directly to ground. I would begin checking everything carefully right from the battery on back till you find the problem. Check anywhere a wire runs beside, under, or on top of any sharp metal piece, for a bare spot, then if you find one, tape it up. Also, check the place where the battery "negative" or black cable goes to ground, to see if the connection is rusty or loose. Check where the wires come out from under the flywheel cover, might be a bare wire there. Where the headlight wires plug together near the hood hinges and make sure the battery connections are tight. If you are not finding anything, then you may need to replace the harness. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, just click on this link to schedule service: Sears Home Services. I hope this helps. If you need further assistance, please reply to this thread. Thank you for using Manage My Life.

all connections are correct, clean, and tight. i am getting a reversed reading at the solenoid. battery is new. when i turn the key i am getting nothing. is the solenoid the problem? ive been working on automotives since i was a kid and the wiring aspect is not an issue. im just wondering if the solenoid could be the culprit before i order one. cant find one anywhere in a local sears or mower shop.

Place your meter leads on the battery terminals and try to start the engine. If the voltage in the battery drops, the battery is defective. If the voltage is fine, place the shank of a screwdriver cross the large terminals on the solenoid. This will arc when you turn the key. Once the connection is made, the starter should turn over. If it does not then replace the soleniod. If the starter turns over you have to check the voltage on the white wire from the ignition switch when the key is in the start position. If you have 12 volts there you need to check along the white wire to the solenoid to find where the voltage is dropping. Please let me know if you need anything else. the white wire is the trigger for the sol. to send power on to the starter. if you do not have 12 volts in the white wire when the key is in the start position you need to find the cause before buying a new sol. that you don't need. that white wire runs through the interlock safety switches before it gets to the sol. start checking the brake switch and be sure the deck is disengaged. with the parking brake set it over rides the seat switch but the deck engagement switch still needs to work for the 12 volts to be in the white wire to the sol. when the key is in the start position no volts in white wire with the key just on in needs to be in the start position. if you hear no click at the carbs fuel shut off sol. then check the fuse and if it is good make sure there is 12 volts going to the key switch and coming back out of the switch when the switch is on. if the key switch is ok you should be able to hear the carbs fuel shut off sol. clicking when turning the key on and off.

Sorry Nathan, I didn't see you were working on a rear engine rider. the trigger wire on the rear engine rider is the orange wire on the sol. not the white wire. It's been awhile since I worked on one of these but some of the rear engine riders you have to be in the seat the parking brake does not over ride the seat switch. and maybe there is no fuel shut off sol. on the engine. but you will need 12 volts in the trigger wire on the sol. for the engine to start and the orange wire runs through the safety interlock system before it gets to the sol. it runs through the deck switch and the brake switch before it gets to the sol. but the seat switch is grounding out the coil if you are not in the seat giving you no spark, looking at the wiring diagram on sears part direct using you riders model # you can see the wiring and electrical diagrams.

all the switches safety switches are working fine. the fuse is good but it keeps blowing when i turn the mower OFF. i replaced the fuse but now i get nothing when i turn the key. i am taking the battery to have a deep cycle test done just to be on the safe side. i will reclean and secure all grounds and connections this afternoon. i "hotwired" the mower and got the same result so i know the issue does not exist in the key switch.

I know that it can be very frustrating to have issues with your compact refrigerator.  From what you are describing it does sound like the thermostat is malfunctioning and needs to be replace. However, I would suggest that you test it before you replace it. This way you know for sure it is the problem.  You will need a multi-meter for this. What you will be looking for is a open circuit.  The thermostat should open and close as it runs, if the circuit is open all the time, it will cause the unit to freezer. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, just click on this link to schedule service: Sears Home Services . I hope this helps. If you need further assistance, please reply to this thread.
