Thank you for your question on the burner giving you flash backs.

You should remove the burner not the knob for the burner.

Remove the grill grates and then the flavor plates and then locate the back end of the burner that is giving you the flash backs.

Remove the retainer for that burner and slide the burner back and up to clear the orifice spud on the gas valve.

You can then clean the burner tube from and debris that has accumulated and re-install the burner.

Please let me know if that solved the problem.

A:

When customers refer to "flash back" they are usually referring to either flare-ups inside the barbecue or they are referring to flames coming out of the front of the burner where it fits onto the control valve. For the former the culprit is almost always cleaning as grease build-up needs to be cleaned out of the bbq. For the latter cleaning is also usually the problem but if the burner is not installed perfectly parallel with the valve orifice the gas can spray the side-walls of the burner and splash back out. This can ruin the lubricant in the valve. Clean the ports and orifice and make sure the area inside the valve where the orifice belongs is not clogged. Small insects can crawl through the orifice to make a home in the valve behind the orifice.

Q:

My brand new grill won't heat up. What is wrong?

A:

Remove the cooking grates and the burner shields so you can see the burners. Light the burners and see if all 3 are lighting. You might have a stopped up burner from the drippings of the cooking.

If all three burners do light see if the flames are 3/4-1 inch high. If the burner flames are very small the regulator might be cutting the gas flow down. The regulator and the tank have a safety valve in them that will turn the flow of gas off or almost off if it senses too much gas flowing. This is in case a hose ruptures.

Turn the tank off and remove the regulator. Reinstall the regulator and be sure it is fully seated on the tank. If it isn't tight enough it won't depress the plunger to open the safety valve inside the tank.

If you don't get it working satisfactorily, schedule service and let a technician diagnose and repair the grill. The grill has a one year warranty.
