Q:

Yardman 42/18 riding mower elec. short?

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having with the fuse on the tractor. I know how frustrating that is.

Without a model number provided for the Yardman, we are limited with the suggestions we can provide, so I will give you a few suggestions to try:

I would begin checking everything carefully right from the battery on back till you find the problem. Check anywhere wires runs beside, under, or on top of any sharp metal piece, for a bare spot, then if you find one, tape it up. Also, check the place where the battery "minus" or black cable goes to ground, to see if the connection is rusty or loose. Check where the wires come out from under the flywheel cover, there might be a bare wire there.

If the fuse is blowing as soon as you turn the key to the run position, try disconnecting the operator presence switch relay, seat switch and the clutch/brake pedal switch and see if still blows the fuse. I suspect one of the three could be bad or one of the circuits from the ignition switch to one of the three is likely shorted to ground.

If your engine has a regulator, unplug the red wire at the regulator and then see if the fuse still blows. If the fuse still blows there is something going on with the harness on the tractor, most likely. If the fuse does not blow then the problem could be with the charging system. At that point, check the AC voltage coming into the regulator (2 matching wires). There should be about 28-35VAC on them at full throttle. If that voltage is there then check the red wire for 12-14VDC at full throttle. If one of those voltages is not there or is out of those parameters then the component is bad. This is often caused by a failed alternator coil so if the AC voltage is not there then the alternator is bad. If the AC voltage is there then the problem is going to be with the regulator.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.
