Thank you for your update on the connections for the cord.

I have found that the connections at the bottom where is plug into the power mate give the most problems, but in you case it sounds like the top connection at the handle is the problem.

They have used this style of connections for 20 years and the only problem is the moving back and forth actions in time will wear out the connections.

If you have not already done so, I would suggest that you replace both the male and female plug in connections and this should solve your problem.

Please let me know how it goes.

Sam A.

Gentlemen, A very important finding which resolved the issue. In inspecting closely the problem once more, I noticed that the plug (female) inside the handle was being pushed back when connecting to the Wand (male connector) causing the bad connection (which was hard to see). I have resolved the issue by reinforcing the correct position of the connector that is part of the switch harness using strapping tape (to make sure the connector would not move from its original position during the plug & unplug process). The issue has been resolved.

Thanks for posting. I find it quite interesting that a couple years later and the vacuums are still being made with the same faulty part. I experienced the same exact thing. I will try your tip when installing the new wiring harness.

Q:

Why does my vacuum cleaner model 116.29712990 not run when the slide is on carpet but it does run well on the floor position?

A:

From the description you give I suspect the switch is bad but this would be true only if the motor stops turning when the switch is switched from floor to carpet.

If the motor keeps running and there is suction then the most likely cause of the problem would be a broken belt or bad agitator bearing.

The 676480 slide switch can be obtained from the following link: Sears PartsDirect .

I hope this information is helpful to you but submit another question with any additional details for further assistance.
