Q:

Does Sears have REPAIR Instructions for working on their Kenmore Vacuum cleaners (not parts lists)?

A:

There is not a repair manual for your particular model of vacuum cleaner. There is a repair manual for a similar model available to me. I provided the images below that show how to access the swivel in the similar model. This should help you with the disassembly of your Power-Mate. Be sure that the unit is unplugged when accessing these internal components.

As shown in the first image below, you will need to remove the nozzle cover, agitator cover, height adjustment assembly and the overload protector to access and remove the swivel assembly. As noted, pay close attention to wire routing. Take pictures if necessary. The clearance is very tight and the routing of wires is crucial to this repair. The second and third images show how to remove the covers and assemblies to access the nozzle.

If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details.

Thank you for your question as to the replacement of the relay for the vacuum cleaner.

In looking up the part I did not see that it was a different part.

I will research the wiring instructions and will get back to you tomorrow.

Sam: The difference between the original relay and the new one is: original has 1 prong on one side and 3 on the other. The new one has 2 prongs on each side. I wired the new relay like the directions said, but have a black wire from the cord to the front socket for the wand left over. the instructions talk about a receptacle wire. Is that to the cord reel then to wall receptacle, or to the receptacle for the hose plug? Its confusing to me. The nos. on the relay, new, don't correspond with the instruction nos. called out either. Bill

Thank you for the update on the wiring of the replacement relay. In looking at the instructions it refers to the yellow wire from the receptacle that goes to the front of the vacuum for the hose plug. You will need to cut the connector off and strip the wire end and wire nut it to the white wire. Are you saying that the numbers next to the terminals on the relay are not the same as in the picture? Do all the wire colors match? Please let me know how it works out. Sam A.

Sam: OK here is what I'm looking at. On the instruction sheet for the new relay I followed the steps by the nos. Put the white wire from the kit onto the yellow wire from front cord to hose and pushed on relay post 0. Instruction says post 1. Put the red wire from kit on blue/red wire on post 1. Instruction sheet calls it post 2. Then put double blue/red wire on post 6. Instructions call it post 3. Finally,

Sorry to continue, Finally, The double black wires, one thin from the light by the motor, and a thicker one from the motor was put on post 4. Instructions sheet calls it post 4 also. There is one black wire from the front cord to the hose that is not addressed. It is in the same cord as the yellow and white wires. I need confirmation on where it should go so I don't blow the relay. Thanks. Bill

Thank you for the update on the wiring of the new relay. So if I understand you correctly the terminals on the new relay are not numbered the same as the instructions? What terminal was the receptacle wired to before? Does you model have a wiring diagram on the inside cover for the motor? I do not have a wiring diagram to look at for that model. Before you put power to the relay please let me research why the numbers on the relay do not match the instructions sheet. Sam A.

Sam: Im sorry I can't say what the receptacle was wired to as I got anxious to install the new relay and I didn't write down or picture the original wiring. That is what has gotten me into trouble here. There is no wiring diagram in the motor area or anywhere in this vacuum. I'll wait for your response before I do anything. Thanks. Bill

Thank you for the reminder Bill. I did receive some information late yesterday after I left. He said not to pay attention to the numbers on the relay that are embossed. They have had to change vendors a couple of times to get a replacement relays. Use the picture on the instructions to locate the correct location for the wires in the picture. I have also found the wiring diagram so you can check the location of the other receptacle wire location. Please let me know how it works out. Sam A.
