I will assume there is nothing on the motor that indicates anything about which wire is for what. Normally a bare wire or a green wire will be a grounding wire on an AC electrical system. If you have a way to upload a photo of the new motor I may be able to tell a little more about it. If you cannot upload a photo, see if there is any manufacturing information on the new motor and perhaps I can find out something from the manufacturer about how it should be connected.

Thank you for using Manage My Life!

A:

Definitely having to do repairs yourself can be a challenge to help in determining if you have the right part I would suggest visiting Sears parts direct.com where you can view a diagram of all parts available for your Vacuum. I have attached a link below. Hope it helps!

Pvalde2 - thanks for the advice but that's the first thing I did. The motor is a newly designed part to replace the original but the original rubber bumpers on each end of the motor do not fit. Sears service reps can't tell me if those are new either. (Doesn't say so on the site) I went to the local Sears parts center over the weekend but they don't staff technicians on weekends and you can't talk to one without them charging you first. This is my last resort. If I can't get my answer here I'm going to return the darn thing and buy a different brand.

The 8175179 motor is a substitute for the original 8191709 motor but it should fit. The motor is pictured below.

I found no history of a problem but you might be the first. Let me know if the image below is what you got.

Hi Fred - Thanks for the reply. That looks pretty much like the motor I got minus the top and bottom motor support shown in the picture. Those two are separate parts and I think the real issue here. Do you know if those parts have been updated for this new motor design? Because the original ones I have do not fit on this newly designed motor. They are super loose and do not provide enough overall length when put together to fit into the slot inside the vacuum to create the snug seal required. According to the parts list here: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Vacuum-Parts/Model-11621513000/0582/0642000/P0102080/00001?blt=06&prst=0&shdMod=11621513000 line item 12and 14 are those parts but do not indicate they are updated, but do indicate they are non-returnable. That's why I'm seeking help. Please advise. Thanks!

Also want to add that the motor does not have black or white wires connected to it. They have the metal connections at the base. It's hard to see if that's the exact one because of the foam and supports attached to it. The new motor, for sure, is at least a half inch or more shorter in overall height though.

What is pictured is what you should have gotten. The consensus here is that you received the wrong motor. I'd suggest talking to the parts people and see if they can do better. The motor you receive should have the foam around it with the two wires.
