Question and Answers

Q:

replacing tires on bandsaw wheels. 113248440

A:

Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your question about your Craftsman band saw. I am sorry you are having difficulty installing the new tires. I know what a challenge that can be and will be happy to help you with some useful tips.

If the band saw is stored in a cool climate, you may need to warm up the wheel before you try to install the tires. (A hair dryer will work for this.) Make sure you remove any residue on the surface of the wheel otherwise you will have lumps under the new tires. It will help to have 8-10 3/8 inch x 4 inch dowels precut to help with this repair.

Use some rubbing alcohol to clean the inside of the new rubber tires of any talc residue that may be on the tires. Soak the new tires in a pan of very hot water. It will be helpful if you have a long bar clamp that you can install at the 6:00 o-clock position through the spoke of the wheel to keep the wheel from turning while you put on the tire.

Place the heated tire onto the warmed wheel at the 12:00 position and use the 3/8 dowels to span across the wheel and position the tire over the dowels as you work your way down both sides of the wheel. Start installing the dowel at the 11:00 and the 1:00 position maintaining tension on the tire as you work it around the wheel.  As you get to the 3:00 and 9:00 position remove the 11:00 and 1:00 dowels. Continue working the warm tire around the wheel. I realize this is not easy if you have someone that can help you, an extra pair of hands wouldn’t hurt. If you have difficulty with the wheel turning while you are installing the tires, you may need to remove the wheels and use clamps and rollers to roll the tires on.

I hope this helps. If you need further assistance, please resubmit your question with additional details. Thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business.

Thank you for your question Steve. Unfortunately the casters that were originally made for your band saw are no longer available. However, I was able to locate universal casters that will work for you. I have include the links. There are 4 separate casters, one stationary for front and back, and two of the casters swivel and have a locking safety feature.

Left front wheel
Left rear wheel
Right front wheel
Right rear wheel

If there is anything else I can assist you with, please respond back to this thread. Thank you for choosing Sears Steve, we appreciate your business.
