Based on the symptoms you are describing, it sounds like you may need to replace motor. There are a couple of simple tests that will help verify problem. Make sure the drum is empty before starting any tests. First try turning the drum by hand. If it doesn't turn fairly easily, there could be something jammed in one of the seals or in the motor. Check around the front and back edges of the tub where the seals are. Be careful, if there is a jam, the object could be SHARP. If the drum rotates okay, then the next test will take 2 people. First open the door. Then one of you will need to manually hold the door switch. Next push the start switch and one of you manually rotate the drum. Be very CAREFUL - if the drum starts up, you may get your knuckles rapped by the drum baffles that help toss the clothes. If it starts up, you most likely need a new motor. I have included the link to order the motor for you.

Thomas I recommend you also check for any damage to the belt and pulley, If you notice any damage or wear, I recommend getting the dryer maintenance kit for your model. It will have all the wear parts and instructions on how to replace them. I have included that link for you. I also included the link for our do-it-yourself manual for your model. Should you need extra guidance, it will take you through diagnosing the problem and completing the repair with color photos.

Check to see if the drum lamp turns on when you open the dryer door. If not, then I recommend that you check the house circuit breakers for the dryer. If the breakers are not tripped, then you may need to check that dryer outlet for proper voltage as shown in this brief repair video: Video: Perform a Voltage Check on a 240 Volt Outlet .

If the drum light works, I recommend that you make sure that it turns off when the door switch is pressed in (simulating the dryer door being closed). A failed door switch could prevent the dryer from running. If the drum light does not turn off when that door switch is pressed in then replacing that component will probably fix your problem. You can order parts from this page: Kenmore Dryer Model 110.96586400 Parts . Be sure that you unplug the dryer before accessing internal components. Here is a video that shows how to open the cabinet and replace that door switch. Your dryer may be different than the one shown in that video but the basic repair procedure is the same.

If that door switch is okay, then you could have a blown thermal fuse in the dryer. That thermal fuse is on the back of the dryer. The first image below shows that component. You can unplug the dryer and remove that back panel to access that thermal fuse. Here is a video that shows how to test that thermal fuse using a volt/ohm meter. NOTE: You can also bypass that fuse for a short test by taping the wires that go to that fuse together with electrical tape (with the dryer still unplugged ). Reassemble the dryer and see if it runs with that fuse bypassed. Do not continue to operate the dryer with that thermal fuse bypassed beyond this brief test. If that thermal fuse is bad, then it will need to be replaced (with the dryer unplugged ). NOTE: If that thermal fuse was blown, I recommend that you check the exhaust vent path to the outside of your home for a clog or restriction as shown in that video.

The second image below shows a wiring diagram for your dryer with that motor circuit traced in blue. A failed push-to-start switch could also prevent the dryer from starting. You can check that switch for continuity when in a similar manner to the testing that was shown for the thermal fuse in the video above. When that push-to-start button is pressed in, you should measure continuity through that switch. If not, then that component will need to be replaced.

If that push-to-start switch is okay, then you could have a bad timer, a failed drive motor or a wiring failure in that circuit traced in blue on the wiring diagram below.

These tips may help you determine the cause of that failure in your dryer. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician examine and repair the dryer, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .
