Question and Answers

Q:

Why does my Kenmore dryer keep shutting off?

A:

The wiring diagram for your dryer is shown in the first image below. The second image shows the drive motor circuit traced in the red line. If the dryer shuts off but will immediately restart, then you have an intermittent break occurring in this circuit. Since the timer motor continues to run, it is not likely caused by the door switch unless the door switch momentarily opens and then closes again to restore the neutral circuit connection for the timer motor. You could have an intermittent problem with the motor centrifugal switch. If the contact 5M to 6M is opening, then the dryer motor will stop even though the timer motor will keep running.

If the motor will not restart right away, you could have a friction problem or a bad motor that is overheating.

This intermittent problem may be difficult to diagnose properly. If you are able to unplug the dryer and find a loose wiring connection or other apparent problem, you may be able to repair this problem yourself. I provided information for accessing the drive motor in the third image below.

You can order parts for your dryer from the Sears PartsDirect website if needed.

If you are not able to diagnose and repair this failure yourself then you will likely need to replace the dryer. It would probably not be worth it to spend money to have a technician diagnose and repair this failure. I would spend the money on a new dryer.
