A:

Intermittent problems can be difficult to pin down. I'd suggest you remove the nails. Did the humming sound you mention seem to come from the motor? If the motor is humming then you can try to remove the motor from the transmission and see if it will run. The agitator dogs would have nothing to do with the washer running. I suspect the transmission is the problem. When it hums and will not run have you tried a spin cycle?
