Question and Answers

Q:

Why won't my Kenmore dryer spin?

A:

If the drum is not turning freely, then the motor will not be strong enough to spin it and it likely shutting off on overload. You will need to resolve the friction problem with your drum before the dryer will work. The following link of a previous answer describes the process for accessing and replacing the belt in this type of dryer: How do I replace the belt on my Kenmore dryer?

You may already know how to access the inside of the dryer if you replaced the belt yourself. Unplug the dryer and open the top. See if you can determine the source of the friction in the dryer. Disconnect the drive belt and see if the drum will turn. If it does, then you may have a seized up motor. If the drum does not turn with the belt disconnected, then you could have a problem with a drum seal or support roller.

If you need more help with this problem, resubmit your question with additional details.

Q:

Why did my Kenmore dryer stop working?

A:

It sounds like either the belt has broken or the power was lost. Be sure the electrical outlet the dryer is plugged into is working. If the dryer made a noise & then stopped tumbling this could have been when the belt snapped. You should be able to open the lower toe panel & check if the belt has broken. If the belt checks okay & the power is good I would recommend calling out a service company to diagnose the problem.
