Question and Answers

Q:

Washing Bowling Balls? My Kenmore top loader washing machine as so much play it bangs against the cabinet.

A:

Washers often make noise if the load is unbalance and we all hope that is all it is. When the noise continues it raises concern. I found a previous post with a similar answer that offers a way to start checking for the cause. I attached the link below. If you decide it is time to shop for a new washer, an option is the Sears.com link below. There are some discounts going on. http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/120492-washer-making-loud-banging-noise-spin-cycle-1 http://www.sears.com/shc/s/c_10153_12605_Appliances_Washers+%26+Dryers

Okay, so here's an update to the above listed dilema! I have now removed the entire cabinet and it appears that the banging noise is perhaps not the tub against the cabinet, or at least not entirely. The tub DOES move enough that it hits the inside of the cabinet, but I do believe the loudest of the banging is actually the motor hitting the metal frame. That is actually the first thing to get knocked when the tub dances around. Now what?

From the description you give I suspect the problem is with the suspension springs and/or counter weight spring.

These can be checked by removing the washer cabinet.

You can check that the motor is mounted securely. There is a part called a motor coupler that sometimes breaks.

Another possible cause might be the spanner nut that holds the spin basket is loose.

The first image below will show how to remove the cabinet to check the springs.

Remember to unplug the washer first.

The 2nd image shows the spanner nut and the wrench used to tighten and loosen it.

I hope this information is helpful to you. You can check these things and reply with any additional information for further assistance.

Q:

Why won't Kenmore washer shut off when filling, model number 110.82874700? Are parts still available?

A:

Core Issue: Why won't Kenmore washer shut off when filling, model number 110.82874700? Are parts still available?

Solution:

  • If you have to shut the water supply off in order to stop the water from overfilling, replace the water inlet valve. Hard water and sediment can cause the valve to fail over time.
    • Inlet Valve- part number 358992 - is available for $ 26.59.
  • If the water shuts off when you shut the washer off or by unplugging the washer, the failure is likely the water level pressure switch or a hole in the water level pressure switch air dome hose.
    • Switch- part number 387383 - is available for $ 62.76.
