Q:

Kenmore Dryer 400 Series Model 110.78432700 not heating up 11078432700 Kenmore Residential dryer

A:

Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect. I can certainly understand how frustrating it can be when your dryer no longer heats. I am sorry for your loss. I did look into the model number you have provided, I have found information to assist you.

In a gas dryer there a many parts that could cause the unit not to heat. The gas valve, valve coils, thermostat, thermal cut-off.

You will need a multimeter to test the parts since there can be more than one. I recommend contacting a friend to help you test the parts. The images I have attached will help you test the gas valve, thermostat, and thermal fuse to determine which to replace.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Natasha12, Thanks for your response. I wanted to see if I could follow the instructions in those 3 above images that you sent, but when I click on them all I get is a tiny image. When I saved the images and then tried to magnify them all I got was a bunch of shaded blocks of gray. How do I open up those instructions so that I can read them?

Thank you for the question.  A model number always helps get the best answer but there are some things to consider.  I'm not clear if the ignitor glows.  The resistance reading may be off but the main thing is does the ignitor glow brightly.  The most common reason a gas dryer will run but not heat is the thermal fuse is bad.  If the ignitor doesn't glow then I would start by checking the thermal fuse.  The fuse can be checked with a meter.  Please reply below with a model number for further assistance.

The model number is Kenmore 110.78432700. I also accidently lost track of what is positive and what is negative for the high limit thermostat. What can be done to make sure its hooked up properly?

For the high limit thermostat it doesn't matter which terminal the wires attach to. The diagram below may offer further assistance. If the ignitor doesn't glow then I suggest you start by checing the thermal fuse. There is a small square plug on the front panel that can be pried out to you can visually check if the ignitor is glowing. I hope this helps.

From the description you give the dryer will heat for a short time but then there is no heat.

If the dryer heats at all then the thermal fuse is okay.

Most likely the problem is with the gas coils or gas valve.

There is a small square plug on the front panel on the left side. You can remove the plug to take a look at what the ignitor is doing.

If the ignitor continues to cycle on and off but there is no flame then the gas valve or the coils are the problem.

The valve cost about $100 dollars but both coils can be obtained for about $20 dollars.
