Question and Answers

Q:

How do I replace the belt on my Kenmore dryer?

A:

First, unplug the dryer. Pull the lint screen out & remove the 2 screws going down through the top. Use a putty knife to release the front clips that secure the top to the front. Remove the lower inspection panel. Unhook the door springs from the lower base rail. Be sure the door is latched closed. Loosen the 2 screws, one on each side of the bottom of the front panel. Remove the door switch wiring, making a note of the wiring locations. Remove the 2 screws, one on each side of the top of the front panel holding the front to the side panels. Lift the front off & now you should be able to route the belt around the drum. Reassemble everything except the lower front inspection panel. Be sure the front of the drum is resting on the ledge of the front panel felt; you may have to lift & turn the drum to position it correctly. Place the idler pulley in the slot cut out on the base of the dryer, you will see the slot close to the bottom of the motor pulley. Now the trick is, hold the idler in position while routing the belt onto the motor pulley. Once the belt is on, manually rotate the drum counter clockwise to align the belt. Be careful of the sharp metal edges. I am attaching some photos showing some details of the repair.

Q:

How do I replace the belt on my Kenmore dryer?

A:

The images below show a procedure for replacing the belt on a newer model of dryer that is similar to yours. The front panel on your dryer is different than this model. You will need to remove the bottom front service panel to remove the front panel of the dryer. These images should help you with replacing the belt in your model of dryer. The routing of the belt through the idler pulley is shown in the third image.
