Question and Answers

Q:

What would cause a Kenmore model 110.76742500 dryer to run but not heat?

A:

The image below contains the wiring diagram for this particular dryer and it may be helpful to you in diagnosing this problem.

When a gas dryer runs but doesn't heat the most likely cause and the first thing to check is the thermal fuse.

The thermal fuse on a gas dryer will allow the motor to run but it will not heat. It is located on the blower exhaust in the rear of the dryer. See the image below for how to access the thermal fuse.

The fuse can be checked two ways. The correct and proper way is with a volt/ohm meter if you have access to one and know how to use it. Check resistance across the two terminals and if the circuit is open then replace the fuse.

If you don't have a meter or don't know how to use one there is another way the fuse can be checked. With the dryer unplugged you can remove the two wires off the thermal fuse and join (jump) them together with a small piece of wire. Put a little electrical tape around the connection and don't let it touch anything metal. With the wires joined you can carefully plug the dryer in and see if it will heat. If it does heat then replace the 3392519 thermal fuse. It can be obtained from the following link: SearsParts Direct .

If the fuse is bad and the dryer heats do not continue to use the dryer with the fuse bypassed. It is okay to bypass the fuse for a moment to check it don’t try and catch up on laundry with the fuse bypasses.

Diagnosing dryer problems can be difficult. I found two previous expert posts for this model. Each has information you may be able to use to locate the problem. If you feel a service technician would be needed, another option would be to use the scheduler in the third link below. Hope some of this information helps while you wait for your expert.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Based on your symptom and details it sounds like it may have weak solenoid coils. I recommend removing the small square plastic inspection cover located below the dryer door by prying it out. Start the dryer and then watch and monitor the glow bar ignitor and burner assembly. You will need to monitor the operation for 10 minutes or until you find the glow bar ignitor glowing red and then fading off without burner ignition. If you find the glow bar glowing red and then fading off without burner ignition, replace both solenoid coils mounted on top of the gas valve assembly.

I added a YouTube video showing how to access and replace the solenoid coils. The solenoid kit is part #279834 which is available at Sears PartsDirect . NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before servicing your dryer.

SAFETY NOTICE: Be sure to disconnect power to the appliance before performing any repairs. If you are not comfortable with doing any voltage checks that might be recommended, please contact your local service provider for repairs. Be aware that there could be sharp edges inside the appliance that could cause cuts or other injuries to yourself or others.

From what you’re describing it sounds like the gas valve coils are weak. Another possibility is the gas valve or poor exhaust venting. If the igniter comes on & goes off without lighting the burner I recommend replacing the gas valve coils part number; 279834 www.searspartsdirect.com FIRST, disconnect power to the dryer Be sure the drum & panels are in position before checking operation or the unit will not cycle the heat on-off properly.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
