Thanks. I know what needs to be done and its not very difficult... i just can't find the part numbers. Been to the exploded views in the link and i'm not 100% positive if the orifice and cap part numbers are included. They give the entire burner p/n but i don't need the whole thing.

Since the dryer initially heats up, the thermal fuse is okay and will not need to be replaced. The other thermostats are likely okay as well. In this situation, the gas valve coils (kit 279834 costs just over $20) normally are causing your heating problem.

Before replacing any thermostats or the thermal fuse, I recommend that you perform the following troubleshooting:

  • Check the lint screen and make sure that it is clean. Check the flexible exhaust vent hose behind the dryer to makes sure that it is not kinked or clogged. Make sure that the exhaust vent duct system to the outside of your home is clear. Check the exhaust vent damper on the outside of your home to make sure that it is opening properly. Reconnect the flexible exhaust vent hose on the back of the dryer so that the exhaust air is properly routed to the outside of your home.

  • Pull the observation plug on the lower left side of the front panel just under the dryer door. This will allow you to observe the burner assembly while the dryer is running in a heated cycle.

  • Fill the dryer with a medium load of wet towels so that you can observe the normal operation of the burner assembly. It may short cycle if the drum is not filled with wet clothes or towels.

  • Start a timed cycle on high heat.

  • Observe the burner assembly through the observation port.

Since the dryer was heating for 1 minute, you will likely see the igniter glow and then cycle off. The burner will then ignite. The theory of operation for the gas valve assembly is shown in the first image below. Understanding this process is essential to properly diagnosing a heating failure in this type of dryer. If the burner shuts of and the igniter glows and then cycles off repeatedly but the burner will not ignite, then replacing the gas valve coils will likely fix your problem.

If the burner shuts off and the igniter stays off and never glows to initiate a subsequent ignition of the burner then you could have a problem with one of the thermostats. Submit additional details if you need help with this type of problem.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Hi Lyle - Thank you for the detailed information and troubleshoting tips! I came across your repair suggestion after searching the net, but the coils don't seem to have been my problem. Based on your information above, it sounds like it might be the thermostats? I have a 110.76512692 Sears Kenmore Dryer (12-13 years old) that stops heating after about 30 seconds. Then the burner shuts off and the igniter stays off and never glows again for a 2nd ignition. If I turn the unit off and then restart, it will re-ignite but then go out after about 10 seconds. Could this be one of the thermostats? Do you have any additional troubleshooting tips or part #'s that you think might be able to help? Thanks again for your help! Tony

For Tony: I provided a wiring diagram of your dryer in the image below with the circuit through the igniter traced in red. When the igniter is glowing, this circuit is complete. When you test the continuity through those thermostats after shutting the unit off (and UNPLUGGING the dryer), the thermostats are likely passing the continuity test because they are reset. Your symptoms suggest that the high limit thermostat, operating thermostat or the flame sensor is causing this problem. Of the 3, I suspect that that the high limit thermostat is the most likely failure. You seem to be advanced in technical skills. I recommend that you "bypass" the high limit thermostat for a brief test and see if the dryer will continue heating. You can UNPLUG the dryer and tape the wires going to that thermostat together. Reassemble the dryer and see if it continues to heat. NOTE: When you are testing the burner, fill the drum with a medium load of wet laundry and make sure that the dryer is fully reassembled. If you bypass the high limit switch and the dryer heats properly then this component will need to be replaced (part 3403140). You can order that part from the Sears PartsDirect.com website (see link below). If bypassing the high limit thermostat does not work, you can restore the wiring on that component and try bypassing the operating thermostat on the blower housing. The image below shows the operating thermostat location on a similar model of dryer. NOTE: If you bypass this thermostat, the dryer will heat to over 200 degrees if you allow it to keep running. The high limit thermostat will eventually open to protect the dryer. Do not allow the dryer to overheat and continue to run with this thermostat bypassed. Once you determine whether the dryer continues to heat with this component bypassed, I recommend that you shut it off and unplug it. Restore the wiring to the original configuration. (Continued)

For Tony: (Continued) If the high limit and operating thermostats are not causing your problem, then the flame sensor is your likely failure. The thermal fuse will not reset so that is not your likely failed component. NOTE: Bypassing the components as noted above is a diagnostic procedure normally performed by technicians. If you use those procedures, be sure that you UNPLUG the dryer before accessing internal components. Tape the wires with electrical tape to prevent them from shorting to the metal cabinet. Bypassing the operating thermostat and high limit thermostat could blow the thermal fuse. To prevent this from happening, you may consider by passing that component during the above tests. As noted above, the thermal fuse will not reset if it is blown. I hope that these tips help. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.
