Question and Answers

Q:

I have a Kenmore Elite Dryer. I am hearing banging noise from the top of the dryer when I turn it on.

A:

Banging from the dryer is not uncommon but it seems odd coming from the top. The expert will review this model and situation to respond. I did attach the schematics from Sears Parts Direct so you can see where everything is located.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the dryer. The clearance between the top and the drum is close. If someone stepped on the top or set something heavy on top of the dryer, it could bent the top enough for the drum to hit the top.

I will be able to assist you in removing the top to push the dent out.

  • First, unplug the dryer.
  • Then remove the console end caps.
  • Once the end caps are removed, the screws securing the console can be taken out.
  • Then tip the console up to access the screw securing the top.
  • Remove the three screws securing the top.
  • After those screws are removed, slide the top forward to clear the tabs and lift it off.
  • Once removed place the top up side down on a thick blanket.
  • Look for signs of scraping and push down in those areas. This should remove the dent.
  • After you have the dents pushed out, reassemble the dryer and check the operation.

Please let me know if you need further assistance on the dryer.

Thank you soooo much for the directions. I think I can do this. One more question though. Until I get a chance to do this, is is safe to use the dryer while the drum is hitting the top?????

I do not recommend using it while it is hitting the top. It is possible for the screw heads to cut into the top. I do not think the repair will take you very long to complete.

OK, I understand. Also, the end caps and screws that you are talking about are on the back at the top of the dryer, right?

The end caps are on the face of the console on each end. The first image above shows the end cap coming off. I have posted a link below for a video that shows how the dryer comes apart. Please click on the link to watch the video. You do not have to take the dyer completely apart as shown in the video. Just follow the instructions upto taking the top off.
