I have read the links you provided. Thanks for the info. I will attempt to swap the relays. My two questions are 1. I have a gas dryer, can I expect to find a heater control relay as well as a motor relay? 2. Where can I find a schematic of a the dryer I have? Kenmore Elite, Gas Model 11072972101?

I provided a wiring schematic for your exact model of dryer in the first image below.

If you unplug the dryer and switch those relays and the dryer keeps running, then replacing the bad relay (part 3405281) should fix this problem. You can order that part from the Sears PartsDirect website. Here is a direct link for that part: Relay . The heater relay is exactly the same part as the motor relay in this dryer.

If you switch the relays and the dryer will not stay running when the start button is released, then I recommend that you check the wiring connections that are traced in colors on that second wiring schematic that I provided below. The start sense wire needs to be connected properly and the pink/black wires also need to be secure on the control board. If you find no wiring connection problems, then the control board (part W10116564) will probably need to be replaced. It is unlikely that 2 relays will go bad at once.

I hope that this information helps. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

I recommend that you continue to consider Kenmore products when purchasing new appliances. Although you had this failure in your dryer, the Kenmore appliances are dependable and durable. We are uniquely positioned to help you with free do-it-yourself repair advice in the unlikely event that you do have another failure. Let us know if you ever need more help.

Hi William,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life.

I am sorry you are having problems with your dryer.

From what you are describing most likely your motor is overheating and kicking out on overload. Try turning the drum by hand, you should not feel much resistance. Then open the door, depress the door switch and try starting a cycle while you turn the drum.

Here is a video that demonstrates how to gain access to the motor; Video . Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts. While you disassemble your dryer you will need to look for burns or melted wires. When you have your dryer apart try to determine where the burning smell is coming from, up in the console or down at the motor. Check to see if the belt is damaged.

Any checks beyond these will require the use of an ohm/volt meter. If you have a meter and are confident in your ability to safely perform these checks, let me know and I will be happy to assist you with these checks.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I hope this is helpful. Check the things I have covered here and if I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

Thanks again for using Manage My Life.
