Hi,

Thanks for contacting ManageMyLife. I understand how frustrating it is having trouble with your appliance not working.

For the dryer not to heat, but the motor runs indicates a thermistor problem with the heater.  The thermistor is located on the blower housing but can be ohmed from the console.  You can ohm the thermistor from the rear of the dryer if you disconnect the dryer from and wall and turn off the gas.  The large rear panel can be removed and you will see the thermistor located on the blower housing.  See the pictures of the location and the ohms reading you should expect to find with a multimeter.

NOTE:  Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service.

Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts.

If you decide not to work on the dryer and will have a Sears Home Service  technician out, just follow this link.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. We are always here to help.

Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.

Your likely failure is that you have weak gas valve coils. The theory of operation for the gas valve assembly is shown in the image below. According to your description, the gas valve coils are strong enough to open the gas valves for ignition from a cold start. During subsequent ignition attempts after they are heated up, the coils are too weak to open the valves. I recommend that you replace the gas valve coils to fix this problem. Almost all of the Kenmore Series 80 dryers will use the gas valve coil kit that is part number 279834. You can order that kit from the Sears PartsDirect website. Here is a direct link for that kit: Gas Valve Coil Kit . If your Series 80 dryer has the lint screen that pulls out of the top panel, you can use the procedure in this video to replace the gas valve coils: 29" Dryer Gas Valve Coil Replacement . If the lint screen is at the bottom of the opening to the dryer drum, you can use the procedure in this video: 27" Dryer Gas Valve Coil Replacement .

Be sure that you unplug the dryer and shut off the gas supply before accessing internal components.

This information should help you repair this heating failure in your dryer. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details and the full model number of your Kenmore 80 Series dryer.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Q:

Why won't my gas dryer dry?

A:

I assume that you're saying that the dryer will run but is not producing any heat.

There could be several causes of your dryer to not heat:

  • Broken igniter
  • Flame sensor
  • Thermal fuse
  • Electronic control board
  • Heater relay
  • Thermistor
  • Gas valve coils
  • Motor switch
  • High limit thermostat
  • Temperature switch

Due to the complexity of this model dryer I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your dryer.

Resubmit your question for more specific information if your dryer produces heat.
