The main Tub barring needs replacing, do I remove the tub from the top or the back. I am a handy guy, should I also purchase a service manual before starting ? or is this a straight forward R & R

First I suggest you go shopping. You will find similar brand new washers in the $350 dollar range.

The tub will come out the top. You can raise the top with a putty knife to release the clips holding the top down. The clips are about 2inches in from the front corners.

The service manual would be a good idea but like most parts for this 25-30 year old washer the manual is not available.

The bearing requires a special tool to install it which is no longer available.

The baseplate with the bearing installed was the preferred way to replace the bearing but the baseplate is also no longer available.

Another problem is that as you remove the outer tub I'm sure the tub will have several holes due to rust.

I'd suggest you shop for a replacement.

Hello Fred Thanks for the Info, tho it dopes not leave a lot of hope in fixing it. This one fits the saying they don't make'm like that anymore. I've looked around and the used washing machines, look and feel like their made poorly. Thin cheap and disposable. There is a local parts house that said if I bring in the part that they may have it. I will call around to see if any repair men have the tool. What is it that I would be looking for ? asking for ?

A bearing tool for an old Whirlpool belt drive. If you looking at older machines I suggest looking for a Whirlpool Direct Drive washer. They have been around since the belt drive was retired. A few months ago you could get a brand new Whirlpool/Kenmore Direct Drive washer for $329 dollars. The only reason these where fased out was because of the new Energy requirements of the government. You should be able to find on at the scratch and dent or in the paper foe $100-200 dollars.
