No flame, no fire, not heat. Managemylife is here to find out what can be causing the Kenmore dryer not to heat. In my research I have come up with a few links on dryer with no flames. This may help until you get a response from an expert.

You could have a problem with that igniter. I recommend that you check a few things before ordering that part. You should find an observation port on the lower left side of that front panel. Pull the plug on that port and run the dryer in a heated cycle. Observe the burner assembly through that observation port. See if that igniter is glowing. The theory of operation for that gas valve assembly is shown in the second image below. If that igniter is not glowing then you could have a bad igniter or you could have a problem with one of the other components in that heating circuit. The first image shows a wiring diagram of the dryer with that heating circuit traced in red. A blown thermal fuse is a more common failure than a bad igniter. You can unplug the dryer and remove the back panel to access the thermal fuse. The location of that fuse on the blower housing is shown in the third image below. Here is a link for a video that shows how to test that thermal fuse with a volt/ohm meter: Dryer Thermal Fuse Testing . If that thermal fuse is okay, then you can check the other components in that circuit (including the igniter) for continuity in a similar manner. Here is a link for a video that shows how to access and replace that igniter: Gas Dryer Ignitor Replacement .

You can order parts from this page: Kenmore Gas Dryer 110.72842101 Parts . Be sure that you unplug the dryer and shut off the gas supply before accessing and replacing internal components.

I hope that this information helps. You could be correct about that igniter. This information may help you avoid buying the wrong part if that igniter is not causing your failure. If the igniter glows then it is likely okay. You could have bad gas valve coils if that igniter is glowing and then fading off when the dryer is running in a heated cycle.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

Hi Tracy,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life. I know how frustrating it can be when appliances do not function properly.

If your dryer heats when you first turn it on the most likely failure is the valve coils. Here is a video that will demonstrate gaining access to and replacing the valve coil kit (part number 279834); Video . Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts. This video is for demonstration purposes only. This dryer may not look exactly like yours, but the procedure is basically the same.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I have this Kenmore model, and am having the same problem with heating. I removed the plug from the lower left front to check the ignitor. It started out glowing, but then faded out, so I followed instructions in a previous expert post, which said, "If the ignitor is glowing and then fading out, all of the components noted above are apparently okay. Your likely failure in this situation would be failed gas valve coils. There is a kit available that has both coils for a lower price than purchasing them separately. The part number for the kit is 279834." I purchased the valve coils and followed the instructions in the video posted on 10/3/11, but it does the same thing. any other suggestions?

Hi Michael, I provided a wiring diagram for your dryer in the first image below. The second image has a theory of operation for the gas burner assembly. This information may help you determine the cause of your problem. The igniter should be fading off as described in the second image. If the igniter glows and then fades without ignition, you could have a failed gas valve, plugged orifice, or gas supply issue. I hope this is helpful. Check the things I have covered here, and if I may be of further assistance, include more details in a reply to this post. Landell
