Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The part shown in the image is not needed. It was located on the motor shaft behind the pulley in case the belt happens to come off. You can leave it off without any problems.

I added a YouTube video showing the procedure of installing the drum belt .

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern. The failure may not be either one but it could be.

There could one out of many possible component failures:

  • Timer
  • Hi Limit thermostat
  • Thermal cut off
  • Operating thermostat
  • Thermal fuse
  • Flame sensor
  • Ignitor

In order to diagnose which one has failed will require testing them for continuity using an OHM meter. I would start with checking the thermal cut off and the thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is located on the blower housing and it will have two Blue wires attached and the thermal cut off is located at the top of the heater box and it will have a Black and Red wire with a White stripe. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord form the power source before removing the rear panel and testing them for continuity.

The thermal fuse and thermal cut off can be tested for continuity using an OHM meter. Disconnect the two wires from the component before testing it for continuity. If one of the two components tests open/no continuity, replace that component. If both tests Okay, then you will need to check the other components connected in series between the timer and gas valve assembly.

I added an image below of the wiring diagram so that you see which components are in the heat circuit.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
