The failure is either the console with membrane or the electronic control board. In order to diagnose which one has failed will require a volt/ohm meter and some troubleshooting. Troubleshooting will require checking and confirming the voltage supply to the control board as well as checking the console with membrane switches using an ohm meter. NOTE: I do not recommend checking and confirming voltages unless you have experience and feel safe and confident in doing so, otherwise I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your dryer. The voltage supply must be present across pins 2 and 5 at P1 connector. If voltage is present then visually check connectors P3 and P4 are inserted all the way. I added the diagnostic procedures in the images below. The last image shows how to remove the console end caps in order to access and remove the screws located at the bottom of both end caps. Once the two screws have been removed slide the console forwards and then lift it up and hinge it over the rear panel. Note: Disconnect the power cord before placing the console in the service position. I recommend calling Sears at 1-800-4MY-HOME or 1-800-469-4663 to diagnose and repair your dryer.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Q:

Why is my Kenmore dryer displaying an E1 error code?

A:

The E1 error code indicates an open thermister circuit. If the control board does not see (sense) the thermister the unit will stop running & display an E1 error code. This circuit starts & ends at the control board. You will need a meter to make this check with. Please see the images attached for more details.
