Question and Answers

Q:

My gas Dryer will not get hot, but it starts and runs cold 11070202990 Kenmore Gas dryer

A:

Thank you for your inquiry on your Kenmore Dryer, Model: 110.70202990. I am so sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with your dryer. From reviewing the details on this model, if the element is ok and if it is getting the full 240 volts, it has to heat. I suspect that it's only getting 120 volts, which will not be enough for the heating element to work. The dryer will run with this voltage but won’t heat. A voltage check should always be done with a meter. I recommend having this rechecked and use a volt/ohm meter to check the voltage. Resetting the breakers may correct this problem. One of them may be tripped. I hope this helps you. If you feel confident in your repair ability, to safely make a voltage check, disconnect power to the unit and remove the back panel. Now, reconnect the power, turn the dryer to a heating cycle and carefully place the meter leads on the element terminals. Do not disconnect any wires. If the voltage is 240, the element will heat but if it's only 120 volts it will not heat.

Safety Warning: Before beginning this repair, disconnect the power supply to the dryer to prevent risk of injury from electrical shock.

Caution: internal parts may have sharp edges that may cause serious cuts. Use caution and wear protective gloves if possible.

If you don’t feel comfortable/confident doing the repair yourself, you can have a Sears’s repair technician come to your home and repair it. Here is the link for the technician’s website: SearsHomeSerivce.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Your dryer does not have a pilot light. It has a glow bar igniter that glows red hot which ignites the gas burner. There is small plastic inspection hole cover that can be pried off in order to watch the glow bar and burner assembly. You will need to pull up a chair and then start the dryer and watch for the red glow. Each and ever time the igniter glows bright red; it should ignite the burner. If you find it glowing red and then fading off without burner ignition, the two solenoid coils mounted on top of the gas valve assembly are weak and both solenoids will need to be replaced.

In order to access and replace the two solenoid coils the front panel must be taken off. To remove the front panel you must first pull out the lint filter and then remove the two screws that were hidden by the lint filter. The top will hinge open after inserting a thin putty knife in front of the two clips holding the top down. The clips are about 4-6 in from each corner. Push inwards on the clip and hold some tension and then lift that corner of the top up a little. Repeat steps to release the other clip. Once the top is hinged opened, remove the screws at each upper corner securing the front panel to the side panels. Tilt the top of the front panel out enough to disconnect the lid switch harness. Lift the front panel up and off. See images below for the instructions for removing the solenoid coils and the front panel. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before servicing.

Check the things I have covered here and if I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.
