one other data point. If I reach in and turn the drum, it seems to reset a little. I will get the "hum" when I press the start button. Then after the "hum" quits I don't get it again when I press the button. I get nothing. If I spin it again, I get the hum. . .

Thank you for your question. I understand how upsetting it can be when the dryer stops. This does sound like the motor.  If after cooling down, it still does not start, then you need to check the belt and motor. I recommend having a technician verify and make the necessary repair.  You can schedule a Sears technician at Sears Home Services . If you are comfortable making further checks yourself, please reply for further assistance.  Thank you for using Manage My Life.

A:

Having to hold down the button on your dryer sounds inconvenient and I know how important it is to have a good working dryer so that you can keep your washed clothes nice and clean. I have done some research on the Manage My Life website and have located a link similar to your issue. While you are waiting for a detailed reply from an expert I have provided the link below. A:

Hello Robert,

Good job on troubleshooting, better be careful or I'll have to draft you as a Sears technician recruit! You are correct on the failure of the motor relay. It the voltage shows up after the button is pressed, but the relay does not activate, switch it out.

Sears Parts Direct is a direct link to the relay. I have included a diagram for your convenience, in case you need it for future repairs. Always be careful when working with live voltage on an appliance, live voltage can injure and even kill.

Please let me know if you would like any further assistance.
