The directions on this website for part #8572914 says that "Making the repair requires opening the console. To do this remove the screws that hold the rear panel in place and use a putty knife to release the clips from the corners under the end caps...." My question is "Do I only have to get the end caps offs to open the console?" Any suggestions about how to get the end caps off? Maybe I'm making it harder than it really is.

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when replacing parts on the washer.

Under the cap of the agitator you will need to remove the screw that secures the agitator in place. Pull the agitator out & place it on the ground. Lay a towel on the bottom section of the agitator to protect the surface & secure the agitator down with your feet & pull the upper half of the agitator off, with a little force you will be able to separate the auger section from the lower section of the agitator. This will allow access to replace the agitate dogs.

Here is a picture also to see of the dogs.  If you haven't gotten the dogs yet.  IT is highly best to order key number 3.   With that you get the cam, internal parts, with the dogs all put together and ready to go.   It is also on the exact same price for when ordering the dogs alone.
