From the description you give the washer goes out of balance even without a load and thumps.

If the 3 suspension springs and 1 counterweight spring are all in place then one thing to check would be the spanner nut.

The spanner nut is what holds the basket steady. You can remove the agitator to check the spanner nut. There is a wrench for tightening this nut. A flat blade screw driver and hammer can be used. Be careful.

If the basket has a lot of movement up and down then this would be something to check.
