Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore Washing machine, series 80, will not drain or spin

A:

Even though the lid switch is clicking when you open and close the lid, this component is still the most likely cause of your failure. Here is a link for a previous answer that describes troubleshooting for this type of problem: Sears washer 11021884001 stopped during wash cycle will not pump out or spin. Will add more water. What part do I need to fix it? .

If the washer still won't run with the lid switch bypassed as described in the previous answer, you could have a bad timer or a wiring failure that will prevent the motor from running in the drain and spin modes.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

If the washer will still agitate but will not run the motor in the drain/spin mode, then you could have a failed lid switch. I recommend that you check that component first. Unplug the washer to disconnect electrical power. The image below shows how to open the console in this type of washer. Open the console and place an insulated jumper wire in the lid switch harness connector as shown in the bottom of the image (with the washer still unplugged). The wires on your lid switch will probably be gray and tan instead of gray and violet as shown below. If the washer motor runs in the drain and spin model with this switch bypassed, then replacing the lid switch will fix this washer problem. You can order a new lid switch from the Sears PartsDirect website. The part number for the lid switch is 3949238. You can use the procedure in the image below to remove the cabinet and access the lid switch for replacement (with the washer unplugged ).

If the lid switch is not causing this problem, you could have a problem with the timer, a wiring failure or a problem with the motor that would prevent the washer from running in the drain/spin mode. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details.
