Hi Carroll,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life.

From your description the most likely cause of this issue is faulty water level switch. The diagnosis of this issue will require the use of an ohm/volt meter and you will have to perform ohm checks and/or live voltage checks. If you have an ohm/volt meter and are confident in your technical abilities, please reply below and I will be happy to assist you further.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Here is a link that you may use to view the parts list diagram and for parts purchases; Sears Parts Direct .

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

Landell: thanks for your reply. A technician came to the house and determined that the washing machine motor had failed and needed to be replaced. Due to the cost of a new motor and the age (11) of my present machine, I am thinking of purchasing a new unit. Carroll

Q:

What would cause my washer to start agitating before its finished filling with water?

A:

If the water stops filling when it reaches the set level the water level pressure switch is OK. If the water level was stuck in the full position it would not fill with water and would just dry agitate. The water level switch and timer both controls the motor operation.

The most likely cause for the washer to start agitating is that the dry agitate contact could be welded and stuck closed in the timer. There could be a possible problem with a wire in the wire harness shorted to another wire too, but not likely.

The fix would be to replace the timer if the wire harness checks out OK.
