Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I will be more than happy to help with your washer. Upon researching model 11020702991; it sounds like the timer may need to be replaced. The timer controls the cycles of the unit so when it fails it can cause the cycles not to work or advance on their own. I have posted a link of the timer to view the link click here

Q:

Washer Overfill 11020702991 Kenmore Automatic washer, compact a/w

A:

Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect.com and being a valued member.  I can certainly understand how frustrating it can be when your washer overfills.

W10337780 is the water level switch.

The water level pressure switch regulates the water level by the means of air pressure trapped in the air dome which is transferred up to the water level pressure switch my the means of an air hose connected between the outer tub and the water level pressure switch.

If the water quit filling when the timer knob was pushed inwards would likely indicate an air leak in the air hose or the air hose pulled off the water level pressure switch or a failed water level pressure switch.
If the water did not shut off by pushing the timer control knob inwards and you had to shut the water supply valve off at the wall would indicate a failed water inlet valve on the washer.

Q:

How to troubleshoot broken timer knob 11020702991 Kenmore Automatic washer, compact a/w

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. I regret to hear that you are having issues with your washer and do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. Im looking at your model number
11020702991 and the knob when it is pull out will spin freely, but if it is in the pushed in postion it should not. If the knob spins freely the timer will need to be replaced. The knob should pull off of the shaft so that you can make sure the inside of the knob is not damaged and allowing the knob to spin on the shaft of the timer.
Timer part number 661636
